Judiciary Square
The D.C. Courts occupy five buildings in historic Judiciary Square, with some satellite offices in other locations in the District. One of the original green spaces identified in Pierre L’Enfant’s plan for the Nation’s Capital, Judiciary Square is now at the center of a vital and rapidly developing area of the city. At the request of the National Capital Planning Commission, the D.C. Courts prepared an urban design plan, the Judiciary Square Master Plan, to coordinate the Square's renewal and preservation. The Judiciary Square Master Plan creates a campus-like setting for court business and an urban oasis for the public. It calls for the return of Judiciary Square to a green, park-like environment that is safe and secure for the community to enjoy.
Facilities Plan Overview
The D.C. Courts' Facilities Master Plan called for refurbishment of all D.C. Courts Facilities including the renovation of the Historic Courthouse, the centerpiece of Judiciary Square, as the new home of the D.C. Court of Appeals and the creation of new Family Court space within the Moultrie Courthouse. The refurbishment includes the interior renovation and exterior restoration of all D.C. Courts buildings, as well as infrastructure and mechanical upgrades. The program has been moving forward on schedule – the Historic Courthouse restoration was completed the spring of 2009, courtrooms in Building B were refurbished for use by Landlord-Tenant and Small Claims, space in Building A has been renovated for use by the Multi-Door Dispute Resolution Division and Probate Division, the Civil Division has moved to new space on the fifth floor of the Moultrie Courthouse which created space for the consolidation of Family Court on the JM level, and Building C, just to the east of the Historic Courthouse, is now being renovated for the Information Technology Division.
