Probate Resource Center

The Probate Resource Center offers information and brief legal services to unrepresented parties or potential parties in the Probate Division of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Services are offered for free by appointment only to those who fall within certain income and asset guidelines.

The Resource Center is staffed by experienced volunteer probate attorneys who interview and counsel customers as to the specific information s/he will have to gather in order to proceed with the probate process; work with customers to prepare the Petition for Probate and related documents, whether for Small Estate Administration or regular administration, and to prepare the Inventory and Accountings; help customers understand how the property should be distributed to the beneficiaries; and help customers with the transfer of property to the beneficiaries to the extent possible through brief service.

The Resource Center does not assist parties in preparing pleadings outside the standard forms used for probate administration (i.e., no motions, complaints, etc.).

Individuals interested in accessing services through the Probate Resource Center should visit the Register of Wills Office and ask for Alan Baylor. The Register of Wills is located on the 3rd Floor of Building A, 515 5th Street, NW, Washington, DC.

Attorneys interested in volunteering for the Probate Resource Center and who have experience in estate administration should contact Michele Meitl at mmeitl@dcbar.org or at 202.737.4700, ext. 3293.
