The Appeals Coordinator's Office receives, reviews and processes all appeals after the appeal is filed in the office where the case started. Staff prepares appeal documents from the case that are forwarded to the D.C. Court of Appeals.

The office adheres to the Court of Appeals Rules, as revised March 20, 2008.

What is an appeal?
It is a document filed to have the judge's decision looked at by the DC Court of Appeals which is the highest court for the District of Columbia. The D.C. Court of Appeals is located at 430 E Street, NW, Room 115, Washington, DC 20001, (202) 879-2700.

Where do I file an appeal?
File your appeal in the office where your case started.

How long do I have to file an appeal?
You have 30 days from the order date to file your appeal.

What is the cost to file an appeal?
The cost is $100. If you cannot afford the cost, you may file a document in this same office where your case started to ask if your fee can be excused.

Is there a form?
There is a form that will help you include the needed information. The form is not required. You can get a form at this office, the office where your case started or download it here.

How many copies of the appeal document do I need?
File one original appeal with the judge's order attached to it. Have a copy for yourself. Have a copy for the other person that you listed on your appeal so that you can mail a copy to that person.

Where do I order a transcript?
In the Court Reporting Division, Room 5500, (202) 879-1009. Ask for an appeal transcript order form. Transcript costs may have to be paid at the time you place your order. You may file a document in this same office to ask if your transcript costs can be excused.

What is the role of the Appeals Coordinator's Office?
This office receives the appeal for processing. This office will send the appeal and other case papers and exhibits if needed, to the DC Court of Appeals.
